  Golf Tips

Aim Straight to Hit it Straight

Remember, the mechanics of the golf swing are important. But golf is a target-oriented game. Be sure your game is going in the right direction.

When you watch the best players in the world, you will note that they all approach proper alignment in the same way: They all start their pre-shot routine from behind the golf ball, allowing them to properly visualize the line of flight as they are concentrating on the primary target (the green, a spot in the fairway, etc.).

Here's a tip on your alignment using an intermediate target:

1) Always approach the golf ball from behind whether competing or practicing. Select a twig, leaf, old divot or piece of grass about 2 to 3 feet in front of the ball and in direct line with the primary target. This intermediate target will help clubface alignment and visualization of the line of flight.

Note: Failure to properly align the clubface to the target and set the stance parallel to the line of flight will result in shots hit off line. Poor alignment also will create swing flaws if allowed to continue over a period of time.

2) Focus on the line of flight, concentrating on the golf ball, intermediate target and primary target.

3) Align the clubface behind the golf ball, taking aim at the intermediate target, with continued focus on the primary target. Stance at that time should be set parallel to the line of flight.
